Can You Get Baptized in Yakima Without Joining a Church First?

Can you get baptized in Yakima without joining a church first?

Yes. You do not have to join a church, complete a class, or sign up for membership before you can be baptized. In the Bible, baptism follows belief — not paperwork.

If you've been searching for a place to get baptized in the Yakima Valley and keep running into class requirements, waiting periods, or membership forms, you're not alone. A lot of people want to take this step and just aren't sure where to start, especially if "join first, baptize later" doesn't sit right with what they've read in Scripture.

Here's what the Bible actually shows, and how you can be baptized with us on July 25th at Myron Lake, no class or membership required.

What does the Bible say about baptism and church membership?

Nothing in Scripture ties baptism to formal church membership. Every baptism recorded in the book of Acts happens the same day someone believes:

  • On the day of Pentecost, those who received the message were baptized immediately — about 3,000 people in one day (Acts 2:41).
  • The Ethiopian official riding in his chariot asked Philip, "What prevents me from being baptized?" the moment he understood the gospel. Philip baptized him right there, on the road (Acts 8:36-38).
  • The Philippian jailer and his entire household were baptized the same night they believed (Acts 16:33).

There's no instance in the New Testament of someone being told to complete a membership process, attend a class, or wait for approval before baptism. The pattern is simple: hear, believe, be baptized.

So why do some churches require a class first?

Many churches ask people to complete a class or become members before baptism, and there are good reasons behind that — pastoral care, accountability, and knowing the people they're responsible for. That's a real and valid church practice. But it's a church policy, not a biblical requirement for baptism itself. The two get treated as the same thing, and that's where people often get stuck, discouraged, or feel like they're being kept from something that should be simple.

At Simply Jesus Prayer Kitchen, we hold to the pattern in Acts: if you've put your faith in Jesus, you're ready. We're not asking you to join anything first.

Where can I get baptized in Yakima Valley?

We're hosting a baptism event called "I Left It in the River" on July 25, 2026, at Myron Lake along the Yakima Greenway — an outdoor, come-as-you-are gathering in one of the most peaceful spots in the Valley.

  • When: July 25, 2026
  • Where: Myron Lake, Yakima Greenway
  • Cost: Free
  • What to bring: A change of clothes and a towel
  • What you don't need: Membership, a class, or an appointment

What if I was already baptized as a baby, or at a different church?

If you were baptized before but it wasn't a decision you made for yourself — as an infant, or before you personally understood and believed the gospel — you're welcome to be baptized again. Baptism in Scripture follows a person's own faith, not a decision made on their behalf.

Do I have to talk in front of people or explain my whole story?

No. Baptism is not a performance, and there is no test. If you have invited Jesus into your heart, confessed Jesus as Lord, believed that God raised Him from the dead, and given your life to follow Him, baptism is your next step of obedience.

Scripture says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." — Romans 10:9

We will walk you through what to expect beforehand so there are no surprises on the day.

Baptism does not save you by itself; Jesus saves. Baptism is the public declaration that you belong to Him. Acts 2:38 | Matthew 28:19 | Romans 10:9–10

What should I expect before and on the day?

We want you to feel ready, not rushed. Here's the simple walkthrough:

1. Arrive at Myron Lake. We'll gather near the water. Look for the Simply Jesus Prayer Kitchen group. 2. Say hello and check in. There's no form, but let us know you're there so we can be ready for you. 3. Change into something you don't mind getting wet. Many people wear a t-shirt and shorts, or a swimsuit under clothes. Bring a full change of dry clothes and a towel. 4. We'll talk briefly beforehand. Not an interview — just a short, friendly conversation to make sure you're comfortable and ready. 5. Share a simple statement of faith. This isn't a speech. A sentence or two in your own words is enough: that you believe Jesus died and rose again, and you're choosing to follow Him. 6. Walk into the water together. Whoever baptizes you will be right beside you the whole time. 7. You'll be lowered under the water and raised back up. It takes less than a minute. 8. Dry off, change, and celebrate. There's no required class or follow-up — just time to celebrate with the people who came.

Baptism is simple, beautiful, and over before you know it. We'll be with you every step.
