Baptism vs. getting saved: what's the difference?
Short version: salvation is what Jesus does inside you when you trust Him. Baptism is the public picture of it. They're connected, but they're not the same event, and one doesn't replace the other.
Getting saved
Being saved — sometimes called being born again — happens the moment you put your faith in Jesus. It's not a ceremony. It's a heart decision.
> "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." — Romans 10:9 (NIV)
No water required. No pastor required. Just faith in Jesus — that He died for your sin, rose from the dead, and is Lord.
Baptism
Baptism is what you do after you've trusted Jesus. It's a physical picture of what already happened spiritually: your old life buried, a new life raised up in Christ (Romans 6:4). It's also a public declaration — you're telling God, yourself, and everyone watching that you belong to Jesus now.
Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19). The early church treated it as the normal next step, not an optional add-on.
So does baptism save you?
Jesus saves. Baptism is your obedient "yes" to what He already did. The thief on the cross was never baptized and Jesus told him, "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). Salvation was settled by faith. But if you *can* be baptized and you're choosing not to, that's worth asking Jesus about honestly.
Which comes first?
Faith first, then baptism. That's the pattern in every New Testament example. You don't get baptized hoping it'll save you. You get baptized because you already know you're saved.
