What Happens After Baptism? Your Next Steps

By Evee B

What happens after baptism?

You dried off, changed clothes, and headed home. Now what?

Baptism isn't a finish line. It's the starting block. Here are five simple next steps — nothing complicated, nothing you have to buy.

1. Talk to Jesus every day

Not fancy prayers. Talk to Him like He's in the room, because He is. Thank Him. Ask Him things. Tell Him what you're carrying. Five minutes counts.

2. Start reading His words

Open the Gospel of John and read one chapter a day. That's 21 days. It's the clearest picture of who Jesus is and what He's like. Free apps like YouVersion have it. So does any Bible on a shelf in a hotel room.

3. Find your people

You can't walk with Jesus alone for long. Get around other people who love Him. That could be a home church, a Sunday gathering, or joining us for the Thursday meal at Simply Jesus Prayer Kitchen. Whatever fits your life — just don't try to do this solo.

4. Tell one person

Text one friend or family member: "I got baptized on Saturday." That's it. Saying it out loud makes it real, and it opens a door for them too.

5. Expect resistance

You made a big declaration. Don't be surprised if things feel harder for a minute — old habits pulling, doubts creeping in, weird timing. That's normal. Keep going. Talk to Jesus about it instead of hiding from Him.

Common questions after baptism

"What if I sin again?" You will. So does everyone. Come back to Jesus. Confess it. Keep walking. Baptism doesn't make you sinless — it declares whose you are.

"Do I have to change everything overnight?" No. Jesus works on your whole life over time. Start with the next right thing.

"Do I need to get baptized again if I mess up?" No. One baptism (Ephesians 4:5). Repentance is how you come back, not the water.
